Part 1: Be Impeccable with your word

Your word has the power to shape your world.

Welcome to the first installment of our four-part blog series, where I'll be sharing the profound impact "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz has had on my personal recovery journey. Each day, we'll dive into one of these life-changing agreements and explore they ways they can possibly support you to find healing, growth, and personal freedom.

The First Agreement: Be Impeccable with Your Word

"The Four Agreements" begins with this powerful agreement, and it's the perfect place to start our journey. It's a simple yet life-changing concept: Be Impeccable with Your Word. In short, this means speaking with integrity, saying only what we mean, and using our words for kindness and truth.

The thoughts and words that we speak have the power to shape our thoughts, feelings, and actions. They can either reinforce negative self-perceptions or help us reframe our thinking toward healing and growth. This agreement has taught me to use my words to uplift myself and those around me.

How to Integrate in daily life

One practice I was taught early on in recovery, which is actually a quote from Bernard Meltzer:

“Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid”

Realizing the importance of my words to others and to self. Taking a quick PAUSE before speaking and asking myself “Is this kind? Is this necessary? Is this true? And is this helpful? If it was none of the above, (or only some of the above). I would refrain from sharing. This simple practice took a lot of effort, mindfulness, and patience with myself. But eventually it became second nature, and a huge shift in my perspective and life had occurred.

Transform Your Life with "The Four Agreements"

Stay tuned for tomorrow's blog post, where we'll explore the second agreement: Don't Take Anything Personally. And as you join me on this journey, remember that your word has the power to shape your world.

In the spirit of "The Four Agreements," What is a personal practice or small meaningful actions can you take daily to be impeccable with your word?
